Boiler Fault Codes: What Do They Mean?

Your boiler's fault code display is telling you something specific. Here's a guide to common fault codes for the UK's most popular boiler brands.

Boiler Fault Codes: What Do They Mean?

What Are Boiler Fault Codes?

Modern boilers have built-in diagnostic systems that display fault codes when something goes wrong. These alphanumeric codes appear on the boiler's display panel and give engineers (and knowledgeable homeowners) a starting point for diagnosis.

Fault codes vary by manufacturer — an F22 on a Vaillant means something completely different from an F22 on a Baxi. Always check your specific boiler manual, but here's a general guide to the most common codes.

Worcester Bosch Fault Codes

| Code | Meaning | Action |

|------|---------|--------|

| EA 338 | Frozen condensate pipe | Thaw condensate pipe, then reset |
| E9 | Safety temperature exceeded | Reset; call engineer if repeated |
| E5 | Overheat | Check water pressure; call engineer |
| F7 | Flame detection fault | Call Gas Safe engineer |
| 227 | Fan fault | Call engineer |

Vaillant Fault Codes

| Code | Meaning | Action |

|------|---------|--------|

| F22 | Low water pressure | Repressurise to 1.2–1.5 bar |
| F28 | Ignition failure | Check gas supply; call engineer |
| F29 | Flame loss during operation | Check gas; call engineer |
| F62 | Flue gas thermostat fault | Call engineer |
| F75 | Pressure sensor fault | Call engineer |

Ideal Boiler Fault Codes

| Code | Meaning | Action |

|------|---------|--------|

| F1 | Low water pressure | Repressurise system |
| F2 | Flame loss | Check gas; reset; call engineer |
| F4 | Ignition failure | Check gas supply; call engineer |
| L2 | Overheat | Call engineer |

Baxi Fault Codes

| Code | Meaning | Action |

|------|---------|--------|

| E28 | Frozen condensate | Thaw pipe and reset |
| E1 | Low water pressure | Repressurise system |
| E110 | Overheat lockout | Allow to cool; reset; call engineer |
| E119 | Water pressure fault | Check pressure and filling loop |

What to Do When You See a Fault Code

1. Note the code before attempting anything

2. Check your manual or the manufacturer's website for the specific meaning

3. Try the recommended action (e.g., repressurising, thawing)

4. Press reset and monitor for 10–15 minutes

5. If the fault returns, call an engineer — repeated fault codes indicate an underlying problem

Never ignore persistent fault codes. They're your boiler telling you something is wrong.
