Carbon Monoxide Safety — What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

Carbon monoxide is the 'silent killer'. Here's what you need to know to keep your home and family safe.

Carbon Monoxide Safety — What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

What Is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels — including gas, oil, LPG, wood, and coal. It's often called the "silent killer" because you cannot detect it without a monitor.

Sources of CO in the Home

Any fuel-burning appliance can produce CO if faulty or poorly ventilated:

  • Gas boilers and fires
  • Oil boilers
  • LPG boilers and appliances
  • Open fires and wood-burning stoves
  • Gas cookers (in poorly ventilated spaces)
  • Portable generators (never use indoors)
  • Symptoms of CO Poisoning

CO poisoning symptoms can be mistaken for flu:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Breathlessness
  • Confusion
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness
  • If multiple people in the house feel unwell at the same time, or symptoms improve when you leave the house, suspect CO poisoning immediately.

What to Do If You Suspect a CO Leak

    1. Get out of the house immediately — don't stop to open windows or turn things off

    2. Call 999 and the National Gas Emergency line: 0800 111 999

    3. Do not re-enter the property until it has been declared safe by engineers

    4. Seek medical attention — even if you feel OK, tell the doctor you may have been exposed to CO

    Protecting Your Home

  • **Fit CO alarms** — at least one on each floor, near sleeping areas. Test monthly. Replace every 7 years.
  • **Have all gas appliances serviced annually** by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • **Never block ventilation** around boilers and appliances
  • **Never use BBQs, camping stoves, or generators indoors**
  • Halo Heating's annual boiler service includes a CO check. Call 01483 676108 to book.
