Why Your Heating Timer Matters
Running your heating 24/7 wastes significant energy. A well-programmed timer or programmer means your home is warm when you need it and saving energy when you don't — without the need to remember to turn it on or off.
Studies show that UK homeowners who use their heating programmer correctly save an average of £75–£150 per year compared to those who don't.
Types of Heating Controls
Basic Programmer (on/off timer)
Sets fixed on/off times — for example, heating on at 6:30am and off at 8:30am, then on again at 5pm and off at 10pm. These are common on older systems.
Programmable Room Thermostat
Combines a timer with a temperature sensor — you can set different target temperatures at different times of day.
Smart Thermostat
App-controlled, often with learning features and remote access. See our separate smart thermostat guide.
How to Set a Basic Programmer
While every programmer is slightly different, the process is broadly:
1. Set the current time and day — use the +/- buttons or dial
2. Enter programming mode — usually a dedicated button or switch
3. Set your ON time — the time you want heating to start
4. Set your OFF time — the time you want heating to stop
5. Repeat for additional periods — most programmers allow 2–3 on/off periods per day
6. Choose which days apply — weekdays, weekends, or individual days
