How Long Do Boilers Last?
A well-maintained boiler typically lasts 10–15 years. After this, efficiency drops and repairs become more frequent and expensive. Knowing when to replace rather than repair is key to avoiding costly breakdowns — especially in the middle of winter.
7 Signs It's Time for a New Boiler
1. Your Boiler Is Over 12 Years Old
Older boilers are significantly less efficient than modern condensing models. A new A-rated boiler can be up to 90% efficient compared to around 60–70% for older systems — saving you hundreds of pounds per year on energy bills.
2. Frequent Breakdowns
If your boiler has needed repairs more than once in the past couple of years, the cost of ongoing repairs is likely approaching the price of a replacement. As a rule of thumb, if a repair costs more than a third of a new boiler, replacement is usually the smarter investment.
3. Rising Energy Bills
If your heating bills have increased noticeably without a change in usage, it's a sign your boiler is working harder than it should to deliver the same amount of heat — a classic sign of declining efficiency.
4. Yellow or Orange Flame
A healthy gas boiler has a crisp blue flame. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and potentially carbon monoxide production. This is a safety emergency — call us immediately on 01483 676108.
5. Strange Noises
Banging, clanking, or kettling (a rumbling sound similar to a kettle boiling) can indicate limescale on the heat exchanger, pump failure, or other internal faults. While sometimes repairable, these can be signs of an ageing system.
6. Uneven Heating and Hot Water
If some rooms are significantly colder than others, or you're running out of hot water more quickly, your boiler may be struggling to meet demand — especially if it's sized incorrectly for your current needs.
7. Leaks or Corrosion
Visible corrosion, rust stains, or water pooling around your boiler are serious warning signs. Leaks can cause water damage and compromise safety. In most cases, a boiler with significant corrosion should be replaced rather than repaired.
