Why Winter Preparation Matters
Winter is the worst time for your boiler to break down — and unfortunately it's also the most common time, because cold weather puts extra strain on systems that have sat idle all summer. A little preparation in autumn can save you significant hassle and expense.
6 Ways to Prepare Your Heating for Winter
1. Book an Annual Service
If your boiler hasn't been serviced in the past 12 months, autumn is the perfect time. A service will catch any developing faults before the cold hits, and ensure your boiler is running as efficiently as possible.
2. Turn the Heating On Early
Don't wait for the first cold snap. Run your heating for a couple of hours in September or October to check everything is working correctly before you really need it.
3. Check Your Boiler Pressure
The pressure gauge on your boiler should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it's below 1 bar, you may need to repressurise. Your boiler manual will explain how, or call us if you're unsure.
4. Bleed Your Radiators
Trapped air in radiators causes cold patches and reduces efficiency. Bleeding your radiators (see our separate guide) is a simple task that takes just a few minutes and can make a noticeable difference.
5. Check Your Thermostat and Controls
Replace thermostat batteries, check the programming, and make sure your controls are set up for the heating season. If you're considering a smart thermostat, autumn is a great time to upgrade.
6. Insulate Exposed Pipes
Condensate pipes (the plastic pipe from your boiler that drains outside) can freeze in severe cold, causing the boiler to shut down. Insulating this pipe with foam lagging is a simple, cheap precaution.
