Boiler Inhibitor: What It Is and Why You Need It

Heating system inhibitor protects your boiler and pipework from corrosion. This guide explains what inhibitor is, how it works, and how to ensure your system is protected.

What Is Heating System Inhibitor?

Central heating inhibitor (also called system inhibitor or corrosion inhibitor) is a chemical solution added to the water inside your heating system. Its purpose is to prevent corrosion of metal components — pipework, radiators, and the boiler itself — and to prevent limescale formation in hard water areas like Surrey.

Why Is It Necessary?

Without inhibitor, the water circulating in your central heating system gradually attacks metal components. Iron and steel pipework corrodes, producing iron oxide — the black sludge (magnetite) that causes cold spots in radiators, blocks valves, and damages boilers. Inhibitor creates a protective film on internal metal surfaces that dramatically slows this process.

Popular Inhibitor Products

The most widely used inhibitors in UK heating systems are Fernox F1 and Adey MC1+. Both are approved by major boiler manufacturers and are routinely used by professional heating engineers. They are compatible with all common heating system materials including copper, iron, aluminium, and plastic pipework.

How Is Inhibitor Added?

Inhibitor is introduced through a radiator bleed valve, using a suitable hand pump, or added directly to the system when it is drained and refilled. The correct dose depends on the system volume — your engineer will calculate this.

How Long Does It Last?

Inhibitor degrades over time and should be tested and topped up at each annual service. A simple test strip or device checks the concentration of inhibitor in the system water. If the level is low, a top-up dose is added.

Signs of Inhibitor Depletion

If a system has been running without adequate inhibitor for years, sludge formation accelerates. Cold spots in radiators, dark water when bleeding radiators, and increased boiler noise are all indicators.

Halo Heating checks and tops up inhibitor at every annual boiler service. If you're concerned about your system's protection, call 01483 676108.
