The Three Main Central Heating System Types
UK homes use one of three main central heating system configurations. Understanding which you have — and which might suit you better — is essential when planning any upgrade or replacement.
1. Combi Boiler Systems
A combination (combi) boiler provides both central heating and domestic hot water in a single compact unit. Hot water is heated on demand directly from the mains, so there is no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water storage tank.
Best for: 1–3 bedroom homes with one or two bathrooms and good mains water pressure.
Advantages: Space-saving, cost-effective, instant hot water, mains pressure showers.
Limitations: Can struggle with simultaneous hot water demand from multiple outlets; not ideal for large families or homes with multiple bathrooms.
2. System Boiler Systems
A system boiler heats the central heating circuit directly and stores hot water in a separate insulated cylinder. Cold water is fed from the mains, so no cold water tank in the loft is needed.
Best for: Medium to large homes (3–5 bedrooms) with higher hot water demand, or homes where multiple bathrooms are used simultaneously.
Advantages: Can supply hot water to multiple outlets at once, compatible with solar thermal, fast hot water recovery.
Limitations: Requires space for a cylinder, hot water can run out if the cylinder empties.
3. Heat-Only (Regular/Conventional) Boiler Systems
A heat-only boiler works with both a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank (usually in the loft). Water is fed by gravity from the tank.
Best for: Older properties with existing gravity-fed systems and low mains water pressure.
Advantages: Simple to replace like-for-like, suits older pipework and large radiator systems.
Limitations: Takes up the most space, requires loft tank, lower water pressure.
Which System Is Right for You?
The right system depends on your property size, insulation, hot water demand, and existing pipework. Halo Heating's engineers will assess your home and recommend the most appropriate solution. Call 01483 676108 to arrange a free survey.
