Heat Pump Installation: What to Expect

Thinking about getting a heat pump installed? This guide walks you through the entire process — from the initial survey through to handover and optimisation.

The Heat Pump Installation Journey

Installing an air source heat pump is more complex than replacing a boiler, but a good MCS-certified installer will manage the entire process for you. Here's what to expect at each stage.

Stage 1: Heat Loss Survey

Every MCS-compliant heat pump installation must begin with a heat loss survey. An engineer assesses every room in your home — measuring dimensions, noting insulation levels, window types, and the number of occupants. This determines the exact heat demand your home has, which dictates the size of heat pump required. Getting this right is critical.

Stage 2: System Design

The engineer designs the heating system — specifying the heat pump model, hot water cylinder size, pipework changes, and whether any radiators need upsizing or underfloor heating should be added. You'll receive a detailed proposal.

Stage 3: Grant Application

If you're claiming the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (£7,500 for air source heat pumps), your MCS-certified installer submits the application before work begins. This is typically straightforward.

Stage 4: Installation Day(s)

Heat pump installations typically take 2–3 days. The outdoor unit is positioned on a suitable base and connected via refrigerant pipework to an indoor unit or buffer tank. Pipework modifications are made, the hot water cylinder is installed, and controls are wired up.

Stage 5: Commissioning

The system is carefully commissioned — refrigerant pressures checked, flow temperatures set, controls configured, and hot water temperature programmed. Commissioning documentation is completed for MCS certification purposes.

Stage 6: Handover and Optimisation

A heat pump works best when the settings are optimised for your home. Your installer should walk you through the controls, explain how to read the system's performance data, and advise on best practices for efficient operation.

Ongoing

Heat pumps should be serviced annually. They also benefit from an F-gas check every 2–3 years.
