Thermostat Guide: Types, Settings, and Efficiency Tips

Your thermostat is one of the most important controls in your home. This guide explains the different types available and how to use them to maximise comfort and efficiency.

The Role of Your Thermostat

Your room thermostat measures the air temperature in its location and signals the boiler to heat the home until that temperature is reached. It is the primary control over how much your heating system runs — and using it correctly can make a significant difference to your bills.

Types of Thermostat

Basic Room Thermostats

Simple dial or digital thermostats that maintain a single set temperature. Limited in functionality but reliable. Often still found in older installations.

Programmable Thermostats

Allow you to set different temperatures at different times of day and different days of the week. Far more effective than basic thermostats as they allow you to avoid heating an empty home. Standard in modern installations.

Smart Thermostats

Wi-Fi connected thermostats controlled via smartphone apps. Leading options include Nest, Hive, Tado°, and Drayton Wiser. Features include remote control, geofencing (adjusting heating as you approach home), learning your routines, and usage reports.

Smart TRV Systems

Systems combining a smart hub thermostat with smart thermostatic radiator valves on individual radiators. Provide room-by-room control — heating the bedroom at different times to the living room, for example.

Optimal Temperature Settings

The World Health Organisation recommends a minimum of 18°C in living areas and 21°C in rooms used by elderly people or young children. For health and comfort, 18–21°C is generally appropriate. Each 1°C reduction saves approximately 10% on heating bills.

Thermostat Placement

A room thermostat should be placed in a frequently used room, away from draughts, direct sunlight, and heat sources. Do not place it in the hallway if the hallway temperature is unrepresentative of the rest of the home.

Thermostat Not Working?

Check batteries, wiring, and that the boiler responds when the thermostat calls for heat. Halo Heating diagnoses and replaces faulty thermostats and can upgrade you to a smart system. Call 01483 676108.
