The Cost Challenge
A new boiler installed by a reputable engineer typically costs between £1,800 and £4,500, depending on the boiler type, brand, and installation complexity. For many households, this is a significant expense — especially in an emergency situation. Fortunately, several options exist to help manage the cost.
Government Grants
ECO4 Scheme
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements for eligible low-income households. If your household receives certain means-tested benefits and your boiler or home insulation is poor, you may qualify for a free or heavily subsidised replacement.
Eligible benefits include Universal Credit, Pension Credit, and Child Tax Credit. Contact your energy supplier or check gov.uk for details.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (for Heat Pumps)
If you are considering switching from a gas or oil boiler to an air source heat pump, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a £7,500 grant. This is applied by your MCS-certified installer directly to the cost, reducing your upfront payment.
Warm Home Discount
This scheme provides a one-off discount on electricity bills for eligible households. While not directly for boiler replacement, it can help manage energy costs overall.
Finance Options
Many reputable heating companies — including Halo Heating — offer 0% finance arrangements that allow you to spread the cost of a new boiler over 12–60 months with no interest charges. This can make a new A-rated boiler accessible for households that cannot fund the full cost upfront.
What to Avoid
Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true. Free boiler scams and rogue traders target vulnerable homeowners. Always ensure your engineer is Gas Safe registered and ask for a written quote.
