The Boiler Installation Process: Step by Step

Worried about what a boiler installation involves? This guide walks you through every step — from the initial survey to commissioning and handover.

Overview

A new boiler installation is a significant piece of work, but a professional installer will manage the entire process efficiently. Most standard combi-for-combi replacements are completed in a single day. More complex installations — new system types, different locations, or significant pipework modifications — may take two days.

Step 1: The Survey

A reputable engineer will always survey your home before quoting. This involves assessing your existing system, measuring heat loss, checking the flue route, inspecting the gas supply and meter, and identifying any other work needed (such as pipework or cylinder replacement).

Step 2: The Quote

You should receive a written, itemised quote detailing the boiler model, all included work, warranty terms, and payment options.

Step 3: Preparation

On installation day, the engineer will protect your home with dust sheets and begin isolating and draining the existing system. This may take an hour for older systems.

Step 4: Removal of Old Boiler

The old boiler and associated components are disconnected and removed. The area is inspected for any pipework issues that need addressing.

Step 5: System Flush

Before the new boiler is connected, the system is flushed — either manually or via power flushing — to remove debris and sludge. Most manufacturers require evidence of a clean system for warranty validity.

Step 6: Installation of New Boiler

The new boiler is mounted, connected to the gas supply, flue, heating circuit, and water supply. New controls and thermostat are fitted if included.

Step 7: Commissioning

The boiler is fired up and commissioned to manufacturer settings. Combustion is checked with a flue gas analyser. Pressure, flow rates, and controls are tested.

Step 8: Handover

The engineer walks you through the boiler controls, explains the thermostat and programmer, leaves all documentation, and provides Building Regulations notification paperwork.
