Getting a Boiler Replacement Right
A new boiler is a significant investment. Asking the right questions before you commit ensures you get a correctly specified system, a trustworthy engineer, and value for money.
Before Choosing an Engineer
Is the engineer Gas Safe registered?
This is a legal requirement for any work on gas appliances. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and verify it at gassaferegister.co.uk.
Will they survey your home before quoting?
Any reputable engineer should assess your home before specifying or quoting. A quote given over the phone without a visit is a red flag.
What accreditations do they hold?
Manufacturer accreditations (e.g., Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer) mean the engineer has received additional training and may offer extended warranties.
Can they provide references or reviews?
Check Google and Checkatrade reviews. Ask for references from recent jobs if you're unsure.
Before Confirming the Boiler
Why are you recommending this specific model?
The answer should be based on your heat demand, budget, and hot water requirements — not what the engineer has in their van.
What output (kW) have you sized the boiler to?
A properly sized boiler is based on a heat loss calculation, not a rule of thumb.
What warranty comes with the boiler?
Warranties of 5–12 years are standard from leading brands. Clarify whether the warranty is from the manufacturer or the installer.
Is a system flush included?
Most manufacturers require evidence of a clean system for warranty validity. Ask whether a power flush or chemical flush is included.
What controls are included?
Thermostat, programmer, and any TRV upgrades should be discussed.
What's included in the price?
Ensure the quote covers all labour, materials, building regulations notification, and commissioning.
Is finance available?
Ask about 0% finance options if upfront cost is a concern.
